State Director's Bio Michael W. Aube of Bangor was named by President George W. Bush as State Director for Rural Development in Maine. A Bangor resident since 1981, Michael has served in various capacities at the local, state, and federal levels. He was elected to the Bangor City Council and served as Mayor in 1999-2000. Active in the Maine Municipal Association, he served as a board member and 1st Vice President in 2000. He also worked in Washington, DC, as a legislative assistant to Senator Edmund S. Muskie and as an executive assistant to Senator George J. Mitchell. In 1981, he and his wife Marian moved to Bangor, where he served as President of Eastern Maine Development Corporation, a private not-for-profit economic development organization. In 1991, he was nominated by Governor John R.
McKernan, Jr., and confirmed by the Maine Senate, as the State of Maine’s
Commissioner for the Department of Community and Economic Development. Active in state and local boards and organizations, Michael served on the Boards of FAME, Loring Development Authority, Vice Chair of the State Board of Education, and Chair of the Maine Technical College System Board of Trustees. His interest in workforce development led him to be Maine’s first Director of the Maine Quality Center, a customized skill-training program designed to help expand Maine businesses. In addition, he served on the High Tech Commission for the State of Maine. On a professional level, he has served as President of Economic Development Council of Maine and President of the National Association of Development Organizations, as well as having been a keynote speaker at regional and national conferences on community and economic development. |
