Mississippi Rural Utilities Program

Water Programs

The University of Mississippi Medical Center received a USDA distance learning telemedicine grant for $378,365 that created 10 telemedicine sites in 10 remote hospital locations. The program brings patients in the rural Mississippi area access to emergency and specialty medical care that was not accessible previously. It is difficult and nearly impossible for these communities to attract qualified physicians much less retain them, therefore, creating a healthcare shortage. This program is available 24 hours a day on a real-time and unscheduled basis which is required to improve care for emergency conditions, such as heart attacks, strokes, or traumatic injuries. State Director Trina N. George and Dr. Kristi Henderson, UMMC director of Telehealth and chief Advanced practice officer, demonstrate a tele-health system during a press conference.

Rural Utility Programs provide loans, grants and loan guarantees for drinking water, sanitary sewer, solid waste and storm drainage facilities. WEP also makes grants to nonprofit organizations to provide technical assistance and training to assist rural communities with their water, wastewater, and solid waste problems.
