What may the money be used for?
Our home repair loans and grants help very low income homeowners remove health and safety hazards, make needed repairs, and improve accessibility. Typical improvements include things like roof repair or replacement, insulation improvements, purchase or repair of a heating and cooling system, structural repairs, water/sewer connections, adding ramps, and other similar uses.
How much can I borrow?
The maximum outstanding loan amount cannot be more than $20,000.The maximum lifetime grant assistance is $7,500. Loan and grant assistance to a homeowner may not total more than $20,000.
What is the interest rate and payback period for home repair loans?
The Interest rate for a Rural Development Home Repair Loan is one-percent (1%). Repayment may be spread over a 20 year period to make monthly payments more affordable. There is no penalty for early payment. Grants do not have to be repaid if the recipient owns the home for at least three years after the grant is made.
Is there a deadline to apply?
No. You can apply whenever you are ready. Home repair loans and grants are made year round as long as funding is available.
