SPEARFISH ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN SD ASSISTS SMALL AND EMMERGING BUSINESSES
Jan 10, 2008 --

Outline Of Need: Spearfish Economic Development was looking for opportunities to assist small and emerging businesses in the area.

How Rural Development Helped: RBEG funds were approved in the amount of $99,000.

The Results: Spearfish Economic Development is utilizing the RBEG funding to provide loan fund assistance to small and emerging businesses in the Spearfish area. Recently the Dan Diego Tortilla Factory was awarded a revolving loan from the Economic Development Corp.

The funds will be utilized to establish new markets and for developing a food distribution system for potential customers located in Eastern South Dakota. Mitch McKie owner of Dan Diego Tortilla Factory, has been working diligently to establish relationships with owners of grocery stores and restaurants along the I-29 corridor. In addition to distributing his own products, Mitch will be establishing a co-op system whereby he will sell and distribute other food products which are produced in South Dakota.

Dan Diego Tortilla Factory opened in 2007 with the mission to provide fresh, high quality South Dakota made Tortillas and Wraps to restaurants and independent grocery stores throughout the region. In addition Dan Diego’s has recently received WIC certification.

“We are all about investing in the local business community,” stated Bryan Walker, Executive Director of the Spearfish Economic Development Corporation. “Dan Diego’s Tortilla Factory is a wonderful example of a home grown company and we were pleased to have had the opportunity to play a small role in helping the business expand its markets. We could not have done this without the support of USDA Rural Development.”

“Spearfish Economic Development Corp. really understands the needs of small independent businesses. We are proud to be associated with strong partners committed to insuring our continued success,” stated Mitch McKie, Owner of Dan Diego’s Tortilla Factory.

By further developing the market area Dan Diego’s will be providing additional jobs as a result of implementing the distribution plan.
