YOUTH GROUP AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT PARTNER TO MAKE A BETTER LIFE FOR ELDERLY RESIDENTS IN MO
, Jun 20, 2010 --

Outline of Need: Trenton, Missouri, is a sleepy little town located in the Green Hills of Grundy County, Missouri. First known as Lomax Store and Bluff Grove, Trenton was incorporated in 1857 and serves as the county seat. Like all rural communities, Trenton, and the surrounding area is home for many elderly residents who cannot afford repairs and upkeep on their homes, and need some help.

How Rural Development Helped: Rural Development partnered with World Changers to give these residents a helping hand. Rural Development provided $24,723 for purchase of materials to 15 homeowners in the form of home repair loans and/or grants. World Changers did the rest! World Changers is a youth organization associated with Southern Baptist Churches. Each year World Changers does numerous home repairs in the United States and beyond using volunteer youths from around the nation from middle school, high school and college. The kids work in supervised crews of 10-15 members. World Changers volunteers perform major planning of the event and coordinate the youth volunteers who will perform the labor for the repairs. Local churches house the youth volunteers and provide them with meals.

The Results: The recipients of the repair funds no longer have to worry about the leaking roof, unsafe stairway, or inadequate windows, etc. With their worries put aside these residents look forward to the future. Everyone involved, or simply an observer, was rewarded with the joy of helping others.
