(OCTOBER 18, 2010) FILLMORE COUNTY HOSPITAL HOLDS GROUNDBREAKING

Geneva, Nebraska, Oct 18, 2010 --  USDA Rural Development State Director Maxine Moul and staff joined Fillmore County Hospital staff for the breaking of ground today in Geneva, Nebraska. The groundbreaking marks the beginning of the construction of the new $18.5 million Fillmore County Hospital. The hospital serves 6,634 residents in the service area.

“USDA Rural Development is very pleased to help bring quality medical care to the Geneva area which will help meet the healthcare needs of the vicinity,” said Moul. “The new Fillmore County Hospital will not only serve residents today but for years to come.”

USDA Rural Development will provide a loan of $12.6 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act with terms of 40 years at 4 percent rate of interest. UMB Bank, N.A. of Kansas City, MO will underwrite a $5.4 million bond issue and Fillmore County Hospital will complete the funding with $500,000.

The new hospital will consist of 56,587 square feet to include an 8,471 square foot medical office building. The facility will be designed to provide the same services being provided at the current hospital. Twenty inpatient beds will be available to meet current and anticipated future needs. Departments will be reconfigured to provide more efficient operations and ease of expansion.

The current hospital is no longer functional in the delivery of quality health care. The facility has a number of compliance, safety, operational, energy efficiency and infrastructure deficiencies. The hospital would also not meet the current requirements of local and state building codes and the American Institute of Architects guidelines for the construction of hospitals. Many areas of the building are not accessible under the requirements of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Also, the hospital does not meet the requirements for current fresh air standards in most of the facility.

USDA funding was provided through the USDA Rural Development Community Facility Direct Loan program. For additional information contact Janice Stopak at Janice.Stopak@ne.usda.gov; or phone (402) 423-9683 Ext. 121. Visit http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/ne/.
