Gary Suhr of Gary’s Super Foods in North Platte, Neb. wanted to operate his new grocery store with greater energy efficiency.

Gary accessed the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), which he said was a great help. With the loan guarantee, Rural Development was able to offer his lender an 85 percent guarantee on 50 percent of the total project costs as well as a 25 percent grant.

Today, a heat reclaim system captures the heat from the store’s refrigeration units and redistributes the heat through a duct work system to heat the building. Also, energy efficient T-12 lighting was installed. Since the opening of the store in early 2009, Gary has realized a significant energy savings.

“The project has been a real learning experience. The new store is 18,000 square feet and the utility bills are one-half of the costs of our store in Hershey which is 7,000 square feet. With savings like that you can’t afford not to make the improvements.”— Gary Suhr, Gary’s Super Foods

Gary is currently working on a second REAP application to replace refrigeration units and to install new lighting at the Hershey store location.
