|NELSON COMMUNITY CENTER FULFILLS NEED IN RURAL AREA-NELSON, NEBRASKA|
|, Dec 01, 2010
The Senior Citizens Center in Nelson, Neb. no longer met the seniors’ needs and renovations were necessary. The younger adults in the community wanted a fitness center. The Mayor and City Council decided to address the needs of the two groups by building a facility big enough to accommodate them both. The City had the funds to construct the new building, but lacked the funding to finish the interior or to complete the exterior amenities.
The City formed Elk Creek Non-Profit Inc. which owns the Community Center. USDA Rural Development assisted the non-profit with a Community Facility Direct Loan of $72,000 and Grant of $80,920 leveraged with $19,227 from the City of Nelson.
The funds and the hard work of the volunteers in Nelson helped the Elk Creek Non-Profit Inc. to finish the interior of the 4,300 sq. ft. community center that is accessible to community members of all ages. All the fitness center equipment was donated in memory of a resident. Finishing the interior of the Center included installation of a heat pump, full kitchen, fire alarm system, drywall, plumbing, electrical and flooring. Improvements to the exterior were a cement parking lot, handicap assessable ramps and railings, and concrete work.
The community center houses many different events. The senior center is utilized by many including the quilters. The fitness center has an active membership list with a 24 hour keyless entry pad for members convenience. Residents no longer have to drive long distances to obtain the same services that their community now has. This greatly saves on time and expense.
