|REAPING THE BENEFITS OF GOING GREEN-RICH OTTO-ALLIANCE, NEB.|
|, Dec 01, 2010
Rich Otto rented, for many years, the north side of a drafty building that he used for his investment business. Rich determined it was time to start working on plans to build his own office facility. As part of the building plan, he would tap Mother Nature’s heat from the Earth as a renewable energy resource to heat and cool the building.
Rural Development provided a renewable energy grant of $15,327 to MJLC, LLC through its’ Section 9007 Rural Energy for America Program. The funds offset 25 percent of the costs and installation of a ground source heat pump.
A new energy efficient office building now stands in downtown Alliance. A concerted effort was made to ensure the project was environmentally friendly. Greg Sanders from Jack’s Refrigeration installed a ground source heat pump which is electrically powered, saves on utility bills and benefits the environment; making every day Earth Day.
“Though the upfront installed costs of a geothermal system are often higher than a comparable furnace/air conditioning system, the operating costs, utility rebates, and tax credit incentives make them a logical choice for many applications. Depending upon gas and electric rates for your area, heating and cooling cost savings could be as high as 90 percent over an older system.” –Greg Sanders, Jack’s Refrigeration.
