Luling, Jun 30, 2010 --

@@June was Homeownership Month, and nine families celebrated by participating in a ribbon cutting ceremony at G & G Restaurant in Luling, LA followed by a tour of their completed homes. The homeowners worked hard to assist with the construction of their own homes with assistance from the Mutual Self-Help Housing program.

“This program will help rural homeowners face the challenges they have with purchasing their own homes. These families worked together and performed approximately 65 percent of the construction labor and agreed to work together as a group until all homes were finished,” said John Audibert, USDA Rural Development, Single Family Housing Specialist.

USDA Rural Development Mutual Self-Help Housing program works in combination with the Single Family Housing Section 502 Direct loan program, although other home financing sources can be used. The nonprofit obtains a grant from Rural Development which enables them to provide technical assistance to families to help build their own homes.

Family Resources of New Orleans obtained a grant and worked with these families by packaging their applications, working with them on credit issues, and guiding them through the process of becoming homeowners.

USDA Rural Development provides a full range of rural development credit services in rural Louisiana.
