MATSON LUMBER
Jan 04, 2011 --

MATSON LUMBER COMPANY, INC.

OUTLINE OF NEED: The timber and lumber business has been a way of life for the Matson family for more than 200 years. Robert Matson worked alongside his father in the family sawmill as a teenager, and started Matson Lumber when he returned from serving in World War II. The company presently employs 126 employees and owns more than 27,000 acres of timberland near the Allegheny National Forest. Becky Matson, the current CEO, turned to USDA Rural Development for assistance with funding for new lumber drying kilns to increase energy savings.

HOW RURAL DEVELOPMENT HELPED: Rural Development provided a $117,980 Rural Energy for America Program grant to Matson Lumber Company, Inc. to assist in refurbishing and renovating four lumber drying kilns to increase energy savings and reduce energy costs.

THE RESULTS: Matson Lumber matched the $117,980 Rural Development grant with $353,969 of its own funds to purchase the lumber drying kilns. With the same pioneering spirit, commitment to quality, and dedication to customers, Matson Lumber continues the family business of producing high quality timber, while also promoting sustained timber growth, environmental stewardship and public recreation.
