OFFICIALS DEDICATE AZTEC, NM WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT
Project will provide better treatment of wastewater for growing community
Albuquerque, NM, Nov 10, 2010 --

@@USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner earlier today joined Sally Burbridge the Mayor of Aztec, New Mexico to celebrate the completion of the expanded wastewater system in that community.

USDA Rural Development provided a loan/grant financial package in the amount of

$1.5 million to pay for the construction of an additional treatment pond and equipment needed to run the facility.

During the ceremony Brunner stated, “This project is a good example of how the federal government is effective in helping a local community meet its needs with the expansion and refurbishment of its wastewater system.”

The City of Aztec applied for the funds to upgrade the wastewater treatment system through USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Program (WEP).

The WEP program finances the construction or remodeling of water and wastewater projects in rural communities of 10-thousand people or less. The City of Aztec qualified for funds because the sewer treatment plant needed to be expanded and repaired and required new equipment to treat raw sewage.

The WEP program was developed by Congress to target federal investment in rural communities with the most serious drinking water quality, quantity and dependability problems. The water and wastewater programs focus on the needs of rural Americans who lack safe drinking water in their homes.

USDA Rural Development’s mission is to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for rural residents. Rural Development fosters growth in homeownership, finances business development, and supports the creation of critical community and technology infrastructure.
