(FEBRUARY 16, 2011) USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO THE SENIOR CENTER OF MACON

Macon, MO, Feb 16, 2011 -- In a ceremony on February 16th, 2011, Anita J. (Janie) Dunning, Missouri State Director, USDA Rural Development announced the award of $308,400 to the Senior Center of Macon. Funds will be used towards the construction of a new 4,492 square foot senior nutrition center located in the Macon community of 5,538 residents. The assistance consists of a Community Facilities (CF) grant of $250,000 and a CF direct loan of $58,400 from USDA Rural Development. Additionally, the State of Missouri through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program will provide $299,600 grant towards the total cost of the project.

Denise Derks with the State of Missouri Department of Economic Development stated, “The Missouri Department of Economic Development is pleased to be a part of this project with the award of $299,600 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to Macon County on behalf of the Senior Center of Macon.  The CDBG grant funds, in conjunction with the USDA funds, will provide a much needed, centrally located facility.”

“The CDBG and USDA financial assistance means a lot to the community and the Senior Center of Macon whereas we will have an accessible facility to provide services to the seniors and meet the needs of the community,” stated John Richard Jones the Senior Center Board President. “We appreciate the assistance of USDA and Mark Twain Regional Council of Governments in the respective application processes as well as Bank Midwest and Macon Senior Housing on making the site available and the Macon County Commissioners for sponsoring the CDBG application.”

“This is a great partnership effort when everyone works together for a common goal of providing a new senior nutrition center for the community,” said Dunning. “This project mirrors USDA Rural Development’s mission and President Obama’s initiative of being committed to the future of rural communities. I want to personally thank everyone that has worked together to make this project a reality. I am very pleased that so many rural residents in the Macon area will benefit from a new senior nutrition center facility.”

Dunning added, “Appreciation is also extended to our federal elected officials for supporting the USDA Rural Development programs. They have been strong proponents for the necessary funding for essential services for rural Missourians.”
