Johnson County, MO, Mar 02, 2011 -- In a ceremony on March 2, 2011, Anita J. (Janie) Dunning, Missouri State Director for USDA Rural Development, presented West Central Missouri Community Action Agency with a Certificate of Congratulations. Funds in the amount of $100,000 were awarded to the agency in the form of a Housing Preservation Grant. The funds will be used for very low income families to repair and rehabilitate owner-occupied houses in Cedar County.
Cedar County was selected because of the number of elderly households living on fixed incomes, low wages and a very low income population. With a population of 13,544 (according to 2009 Census Bureau estimates), Cedar County has 7,080 housing units, with more than 78% being owner-occupied. A high number of these homes are deteriorating with increasingly high heating and cooling costs having a great impact on homeowners. In addition, Cedar County’s poverty rate is 20.5%, higher than the statewide poverty rate of 13.6%. A little over 20% of the county’s population is 65 or older, also higher than the state rate of 13.4%.
“This is a great partnership effort when everyone works together for a common goal of meeting the needs of a community.” said Dunning. “This project mirrors USDA Rural Development’s mission of being committed to the future of rural communities. I want to personally thank everyone that has worked together to make this project a reality. I am pleased that the residents of Cedar County will have the benefit of these funds. Special thanks are extended to our federal elected officials for making available the federal funds for these kinds of projects.”
