|RECOVERY ACT FINANCES NEW LIBRARY IN KELLIHER|
|Kelliher, Nov 16, 2010
@@USDA Rural Development State Director Colleen Landkamer visited Kelliher today to award the Kelliher School District an $82,500 grant to install a library and make improvements to the city’s community center. Landkamer attended a ceremony at the community center with local officials and students from the Kelliher School District.
“Access to a community library creates additional opportunities for education and other activites,” Landkamer said. “This funding also will finance energy efficiency improvements to the community center, which will result in substantial cost savings and a new heating system and insulation.”
The community center is used to provide several valuable services to Kelliher residents. The center offers a space for community activities, a part-time clinic, an exercise area and a place for Beltrami County and Bi-County Community Action to visit with residents. Without the USDA financing, the community center likely would have been forced to close.
The school district will contribute $27,500 toward the project. The Rural Development financing was provided using funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed into law by President Obama in February of 2009.
The funding comes from USDA Rural Development’s community facilities program, which finances essential community buildings and equipment such as hospitals, emergency response, community centers and day cares. Rural Development also has programs to finances single- and multi-family home loans, water and wastewater treatment systems, renewable energy, high-speed Internet and business loans.
Rural Development has invested almost $2 billion throughout rural Minnesota since 2008. For more information on Rural Development programs, visit www.rurdev.usda.gov/mn, or call the local office in Bemidji at (218) 751-1942, ext. 4.
