|CITY OF WENDELL SELECTED TO RECEIVE OVER $1 MILLION IN USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT FUNDS FOR WATER TREATMENT IMPROVEMENT PROJECT|
|Funding Announced During Earth Day Event at Wendell Fire Hall|
|WENDELL, Apr 15, 2011
@@USDA Rural Development State Director Colleen Landkamer visited Wendell today to announce over $1 million in financing to construct a packaged water treatment facility, drill two new wells, build a 50,000-gallon storage tank and install water meters in the community. The financing comes in the form of a $604,000 grant and $535,000 low-interest loan.
The updated infrastructure will result in a modern water treatment system that meets the standards and requirements of the Department of Health, increases water pressure and improves the billing and measurement process. The event to announce the funding was part of USDA’s annual Earth Day celebration, which recognizes projects in rural communities that improve or maintain a healthy and clean environment.
“The new water system ensures a healthier, cleaner and more sustainable community,” Landkamer said. “This is an investment that pays off well into the future by providing clean water and modern treatment for both the current and next generation of Wendell residents.”
Wendell was unable to meet the primary drinking water standard for arsenic and needed to meet a Department of Health mandate to bring their system into compliance. Users of the water system also did not have adequate water pressure.
The Rural Development financing will build a treatment facility enclosed in concrete block with exterior insulation and siding to maintain the safety of the water. The new storage tank will solve the water pressure problem.
USDA Rural Development has invested over $133 million throughout Minnesota since 2009 to improve drinking water and wastewater treatment.
