Albuquerque, Apr 26, 2011 -- USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner was given a tour yesterday of the construction and remodeling of the wastewater treatment facility in San Jon, New Mexico. The tour was part of the Obama Administration’s efforts to recognize the importance of eliminating environmental problems throughout the country.
“I was pleased to see how well the construction and remodeling of the wastewater facility in San Jon is going and to see how the funds provided by USDA are being used to address the needs of the community and the elimination of environmental issues.” Brunner added, “Last week we celebrated Earth Day and this project is especially timely as it demonstrates the commitment this Administration has to make sure that our ground water is free of contaminants.”
The $600,000 funding for the project was made possible by USDA Rural Development’s Community Program with a $159,000 loan and a $441,000 grant. The financial package covers the costs of the two phased remodeling project. The first phase saw the replacing of aging equipment and components, such as the influent lift station, new pipes and a new recirculation pump at the treatment plant.
The second phase of construction includes the re-lining of a wastewater treatment pond. Currently, the pond is clay lined and once it is retrofitted with a plastic lining the pond will then eliminate any threat of ground water contamination and the system will be able to obtain future permits for the operation of the wastewater treatment plant.
Construction and testing of the upgraded wastewater treatment facility will be completed in the next couple of weeks.
