USDA Rural Development Participates in Building Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Event for Hospital Expansion Project in Guttenberg

USDA Providing $15.2 Million in Loan Funds to Assist with Financing Project

GUTTENBERG, Iowa – June 24, 2011 – Bill Menner, USDA Rural Development State Director in Iowa, today participated in the building dedication and ribbon cutting event for an expansion and renovation project at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

“We are pleased to be assisting with this hospital expansion and renovation project in Guttenberg which will help expand health care services in northeast Iowa,” said Bill Menner, USDA Rural Development State Director in Iowa.

USDA Rural Development is providing guaranteed and direct loan funds totaling $15,206,000 to assist with financing the project. Total costs for the project are estimated to be around $18.8 million.

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital was established in 1961 and was designated a critical access hospital in 2001. When completed, the renovated and expanded facility will offer 18 acute-care medical beds, two labor, delivery and postpartum beds, along with outpatient care through a physician clinic.

Other services such as emergency room, surgical, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, speech, occupational and cardiac rehabilitation will be enhanced with the new building and equipment.

During the past five years USDA Rural Development has awarded nearly $300 million in financial assistance to more than 80 hospitals, rehabilitation centers, healthcare office buildings, clinics, mental health facilities, nursing homes and assisted living centers in Iowa to improve, expand or build new facilities.

“Access to high quality health care is an issue of growing concern to many rural communities as the baby boom generation continues to age,” Menner said. “In fact, the percentage of residents living in Iowa who are 65 or older is surpassed by only three other states, Florida, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.”
