(JUNE 3, 2010) USDA KICKS OFF NATIONAL HOMEOWNERSHIP MONTH CELEBRATIONS IN ESPANOLA, NM
Homeownership Month Theme is “Rural Housing/Rural Jobs”
Albuquerque, Jun 03, 2011 --

@@USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner announced today Rural Development launched their National Homeownership Month celebrations with a kickoff event honoring an Española household. The celebration is one of many events to be held across the nation during the month of June. The month long activities and events will focus on housing’s role in creating jobs and stimulating economic activity.

USDA Rural Development together with the Realtors Association of New Mexico (RANM) will hold numerous activities across the state to bring more attention to homeownership as a major economic driver. During the events, information will be provided to educate the public on how to purchase a home and access financial support for business development and expansion.

New Mexico’s kick-off event was held in Española where Brunner honored 75 year old Magdalena Vigil for her successful application of funds from USDA Rural Development to repair her home. During the cold weather in February, Ms. Vigil discovered that her hot water heater was in need of replacement. After inspecting her house, it was discovered she needed many other repairs such as: new sheetrock, new flooring, bathroom upgrades, new windows and a new air conditioner. The repairs were all funded through USDA Rural Development’s loan and grant rehabilitation program.

During the ceremony, as Brunner was presenting Ms. Vigil with an American flag, he said, “USDA Rural Development is committed to helping families reach their dream of homeownership in rural New Mexico which helps our rural communities survive and prosper.” Brunner added, “USDA visited Espanola last February to talk to residents about how they can use our programs to address damages to their homes resulting from February’s record cold weather. Since then, we’ve received more than 200 applications seeking financial assistance from people like Ms. Vigil.”

National Homeownership Month began in 1997 as a challenge to increase the number of homeowners throughout the United States. Government studies have shown that homeownership is a key element in the nation’s economy with the housing industry accounting for about 15 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in a typical year. Studies also show that neighborhoods are strengthened when there is a higher percentage of homeownership. Homeowners are proven to be more active in their neighborhoods, they contribute more to their communities and a more stable environment for families is created.

It is also believed that without a strong business environment, the possibility of buying a home is very difficult. The outreach that is planned includes one-on-one visits with small business owners to explain the various business programs offered by USDA Rural Development for development of and expansion of small businesses in rural New Mexico.

USDA Rural Development’s mission is to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for rural residents. Rural Development fosters growth in homeownership, finances business development, and supports the creation of critical community and technology infrastructure. Further information on rural programs is available at any local USDA Rural Development office or by visiting USDA Rural Development’s web site at http://www.rurdev.usda.gov
