Albuquerque, Jun 06, 2011 -- USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner was in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico to continue the month-long celebration of homeownership (see attached listing).
The visit to T or C is one of the many events held across the nation during the month of June. The month-long activities and events will focus on housing’s role in creating jobs and stimulating economic activity.
USDA Rural Development together with the Realtors Association of New Mexico (RANM) is holding numerous activities across the state to bring more attention to homeownership as a major economic driver. During the events, information will be provided to educate the public on how to purchase a home and access financial support for business development and expansion.
During Brunner’s visit to T or C, he met with numerous potential clients interested in both housing and business financial support. Also, he addressed local realtors during the Realtors Association of New Mexico’s annual Summer Caravan where they learn about current legislative and other housing issues.
During his address to the realtors, Brunner said, “USDA Rural Development is committed to helping families reach their dream of homeownership in rural New Mexico which helps our rural communities survive and prosper.” Brunner added, “We know the ‘American Dream of Homeownership’ has taken a beating in recent times. However, I’m here to tell you that USDA Rural Development stands ready to make that dream come true through our financing programs.”
National Homeownership Month began in 1997 as a challenge to increase the number of homeowners throughout the United States. Government studies have shown that homeownership is a key element in the nation’s economy with the housing industry accounting for about 15 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in a typical year. Studies also show that neighborhoods are strengthened when there is a higher percentage of homeownership. Homeowners are proven to be more active in their neighborhoods, they contribute more to their communities and a more stable environment for families is created.
It is also believed that without a strong business environment, the possibility of buying a home is very difficult. The outreach activity includes one-on-one visits with small business owners to explain the various business programs offered by USDA Rural Development for development of and expansion of small businesses in rural New Mexico.
USDA Rural Development’s mission is to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for rural residents. Rural Development fosters growth in homeownership, finances business development, and supports the creation of critical community and technology infrastructure. June 3 Española 9:30 AM --Housing and business presentations at the Beatrice Martinez Senior Center located at 735 Vietnam Veterans Road, Espanola NM 87532. Staff will provide information on business and housing financing programs.
Española, NM 11:30 AM --Kickoff event at the Magdalena Vigil’s home located at 1623 Greenfield in Española, NM. Family will be honored for their successful application of funds to upgrade and fix their home after cold weather in February damaged their home.
June 6 T or C, NM 9:00 AM --Housing and Business staff will meet with individuals to discuss business and homeownership financing opportunities.
12:00 PM Address to be made to Realtors Association of New Mexico (RANM) annual housing caravan at the Café Bella Luca 303 Jones Street, T or C, NM
June 9 Las Vegas, NM 9:00 AM --Housing and Business staff will meet with individuals to discuss business and homeownership financing opportunities at USDA RD office located at 1927-A North 7th Street in Las Vegas.
10:45 AM Meet with 74 year old Ms. Stephanita Vigil at her home at 314 Valencia Street, Las Vegas to visit and inspect her home that was remodeled with USDA funds to weatherize home.
11:30 AM Meet with Robert and Jacqueline Polaco at their home located at 4008 8th Street in Las Vegas. The Polaco’s have had major work done to their home utilizing USDA RD funds. During the meeting Mr. Brunner will be given a tour of the construction.

June 13 Tucumcari, NM 10:00 AM --Welcome by Tucumcari Mayor Jim Witcher at the Del Norte Community Center at 423 North 4th Street in Tucumcari. Information will be provided by Rural Development business and housing staff to small business owners and homeowners about financing opportunities.
11:00 AM Tucumcari Senior Center 523 South 3rd Street, Tucumcari, NM 88401 (staff will give overview of financing programs).
12:00 Noon MainStreet luncheon at the Pow Wow Restaurant at 801 West Tucumcari Boulevard, Tucumcari, NM 88401will feature State Director Terry Brunner on homeownership and business financing.
June 21 Grants, NM 1:00 PM RD staff will conduct a workshop on business and housing financing. The workshop is open to the public and will be held at the Small Business Development Center in Grants at 701 East Roosevelt Ave, Grants, NM 87020
June 23 Lordsburg, NM 9:00 AM welcome event by Lordsburg Mayor Frank Rodriquez at Lordsburg City Hall located at 409 W Wabash St, Lordsburg, NM 88045. After welcome event business and housing staff will meet with individuals along the business district on the main streets of Lordsburg about financing opportunities.
June 29 Lovington, NM 1:00 PM welcome address by Lovington Mayor Dixie Drummond at the Lovington Senior Center located at 18 West Avenue “F”. After welcome event business and housing staff will meet with individuals about financing opportunities at the Lovington Chamber of Commerce located at 201 South Main, in Lovington, NM 88260.
July 14 Silver City, NM 11:30 AM Casa Linda Apartment Complex at 100 East 17th Street, Silver city, NM 88061 a ribbon cutting and partner of the year award which will go to W.E. (Butch) Medlock for his commitment to preserving affordable housing in five apartment complexes across the state of New Mexico using USDA RD funds. The award will be given posteumiously to Mr. Medlock’s family during the ceremony.
