(JUNE 29, 2011) USDA CONTINUES NATIONAL HOMEOWNERSHIP MONTH CELEBRATION IN LOVINGTON, NMDISCRIMINATION
Homeownership Month Theme is “Rural Housing/Rural Jobs”

Albuquerque, Jun 29, 2011 -- USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner was in Lovington, New Mexico today to continue the month-long celebration of homeownership (see attached listing).

This year’s National Homeownership Month’s theme is “Rural Housing/Rural Jobs” and events such as the one in Lovington focused on housing’s role in creating jobs and stimulating economic activity.

Today’s visit provided information to educate realtors, lenders and the public on how to purchase a home. Information was also provided to business owners on how to access financial programs for business development and expansion through USDA Rural Development financial programs.

During a welcoming ceremony hosted by Lovington Mayor Dixie Drummond, Brunner said, “USDA Rural Development is committed to helping families in rural New Mexico reach their dream of homeownership which in turn helps small communities like Lovington survive and prosper.” Brunner added, “We know the ‘American Dream of Homeownership’ has been hard for many to reach these days.” He added, “However, USDA Rural Development stands ready to use its financing programs to make that dream come true.”

Brunner and his staff held meetings with business leaders, lenders and local residents to discuss the possibility of acquiring a ‘no money down’ mortgage through USDA Rural Development’s housing programs. He also provided information on how to get financial support to refurbish a house.

In fiscal year 2010, USDA Rural Development awarded $79.3 million in loans and grants in 10 housing programs which directly affected over 11,400 rural residents in New Mexico.

National Homeownership Month celebration began in 1997 as a challenge to increase the number of homeowners throughout the United States. Government studies have shown that homeownership is a key element in the nation’s economy with the housing industry accounting for about 15 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in a typical year. Studies also show that neighborhoods are strengthened when there is a higher percentage of homeownership. Homeowners are proven to be more active in their neighborhoods, they contribute more to their communities and a more stable environment for families is created.

It is also believed that without a strong business environment, the possibility of buying a home is very difficult. Outreach activity conducted by Rural Development during the month of June focuses on one-on-one visits with small business owners to explain the various business programs offered by USDA Rural Development for the development and expansion of small businesses in rural New Mexico.

Those interested in getting more information on a home loan or to remodel and upgrade their home or to get financing to expand or create a business should contact the Rural Development office in Roswell, New Mexico at 575-622-8745 extension 4.

USDA Rural Development’s mission is to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for rural residents. Rural Development fosters growth in homeownership, finances business development, and supports the creation of critical community and technology infrastructure. Further information on rural programs is available at any local USDA Rural Development office or by visiting USDA Rural Development’s web site at http://www.rurdev.usda.gov
