(AUGUST 9, 2011) USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT AWARDS CROSS ISLAND FARMS A GRANT TO INAUGURATE A SMALL WIND PROJECT
Syracuse, NY, Aug 09, 2011 --

@@The public is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony to inaugurate a small wind project at Cross Island Farms, 44301 Cross Island Road, Wellesley Island, on Thursday, August 18, at 10 a.m.

In late July, Alternative Power Solutions of East Syracuse completed assembly of a 120-foot high Rohn lattice tower and affixed a 10 KW Bergey turbine to it. A large crane hoisted the tower, which was then bolted to an underground cement foundation, which had been constructed previously. Both NYSERDA and the USDA helped fund the project, which is expected to supply more than half of Cross Island Farms' electricity needs through its tie-in with National Grid.

Among the invitees to the ribbon-cutting are federal and state senators and congressmen, representatives from the USDA, NYSERDA, and National Grid, the New York State Commissioner of Agriculture, Jefferson County's Ag Coordinator and representatives of the Town of Orleans.

Jill Harvey, the USDA Director for New York, states, “I am pleased that USDA Rural Development is able to assist Cross Island Farms with their investment in renewable electricity. This entrepreneurial family farm's direct-to-consumer marketing strategy increases the supply of locally grown and consumed foods in the North Country and enhances the viability of the local economy.”

Jay Matteson, Jefferson County's Agriculture Development Coordinator, writes, “Whether it is using our soil, water, and sunlight to grow crops, or harnessing the wind to create electricity, agriculture provides a powerful economic development tool in our community. Cross Island Farms demonstrates economic development starts with growing a vegetable and multiplies across our county benefitting many people.”

After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Cross Island Farms' owners Dani Baker and David Belding will conduct an optional complimentary tour of the farm for the invited guests.
