GRANT FUNDED DISTANCE LEARNING BRINGS ENHANCED EDUCATION TO NATIVE AMERICAN CLASSROOMS
Apr 01, 2011 --

Outline Of Need:

The Arapaho School, located on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, was in need of technology to enhance the students’ learning capabilities and bring them into the 21st Century.

How Rural Development Helped:

USDA Rural Development’s Distance Learning Grant program awarded grant funds to Fremont County School District #38, Arapaho Elementary, to improve distance learning services in rural areas through the use of telecommunications, computer networks and related advanced technologies by students and teachers.

The Results:

Since receiving the grant, the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school has received video-conferencing equipment in all classrooms. This means an infusion of state-of-the-art technology to enhance the students’ educational experience and their ability to connect with places around the world. This grant has provided video-conferencing capabilities in the classrooms which means the students can take virtual field trips. The technology will allow students to follow a camera or other technology live in another part of the world.

The Arapaho School will become the leader in the amount of technology available in the State. The school will have the technology in 22 classrooms.

The grant is also allowing the school to acquire 120 iPods that will give teachers the option to provide reading and writing lessons or web-based instruction using the technology.
