OAKES, ND, Aug 15, 2011 --

@@USDA Rural Development State Director Jasper Schneider announced today that the City of Oakes will receive $1.8 million through a loan and grant to replace water and sewer lines.

“Access to a clean water supply and an adequate disposal system is very important to the health of our communities,” Schneider said. “This investment will go long way toward strengthening the safety and reliability of the water system.”

The city’s 70 year old water and sewer pipelines are causing serious and costly maintenance issues. Due to the deteriorating condition, the City of Oakes will be replacing 40 blocks of pipeline. This is the third phase of four to make improvements to infrastructure affected by high levels of arsenic. Through USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental program, the total project cost will be financed by a $625,000 grant and a $1,175,000 direct loan.

USDA Rural Development also has helped the City of Oakes finance their water treatment plant and the two previous phases of water and wastewater system improvements. The Oakes water system serves 810 residential users and 119 commercial users.
