|(SEPTEMBER 26, 2011) USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT PARTICIPATES IN GROUNDBREAKING FOR NEW HOSPITAL IN SUMNER|
|USDA Rural Development Providing $18 Million Loan to Assist with Construction of Replacement Healthcare Facility|
|Sumner, IA, Sep 26, 2011
“We are pleased to be assisting with this hospital building project in Sumner that will not only help expand health care services in northeast Iowa but will also help create jobs,” Menner said. “From basic infrastructure to home construction and necessary community facilities such as hospitals, all across the country the USDA is assisting rural communities in their efforts to create and retain jobs.”
USDA Rural Development is providing the Sumner Community Club (doing business as Community Memorial Hospital) with an $18 million loan to assist with construction of the new facility.
The new hospital will replace the community’s existing hospital which was built in 1950.
The new, approximate 52,000-square-foot facility will offer improved patient accessibility, expanded rehabilitation services, an outpatient specialty clinic and ambulatory surgery.
The total cost of the new hospital is estimated to be $19.6 million.
During the past five years USDA Rural Development has awarded nearly $300 million in financial assistance to more than 80 hospitals, rehabilitation centers, healthcare office buildings, clinics, mental health facilities, nursing homes and assisted living centers in Iowa to improve, expand or build new facilities.
“Access to high quality health care is an issue of growing concern to many rural communities as the baby boom generation continues to age,” Menner said. “In fact, the percentage of residents living in Iowa who are 65 or older is surpassed by only three other states, Florida, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.”
Since 2010 USDA Rural Development helped a record number of Iowans receive funding for economic development projects and quality-of-life improvements. The agency’s investment in Iowa helped create or retain more than 2,200 jobs, aided 2,500 families in buying their own homes and assisted more than 250 communities as they made improvements to their facilities, services and infrastructure.
