@@DES MOINES, Iowa – September 28, 2011 – Bill Menner, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director in Iowa, recently recognized Altoona resident Susan Merrick for achieving 25 years of service to the federal government.

Merrick began her federal service career with the USDA in 1986 working in the agency’s Epworth office helping deliver housing programs to rural Iowans. Her career has also included stints in USDA offices in Winterset, Des Moines, Ankeny and Indianola. She is currently a Single Family Housing Specialist stationed in Indianola and serves residents in Adair, Clarke, Dallas, Decatur, Guthrie, Madison, Polk, Ringgold, Union and Warren Counties with their homeownership needs.

“Every day, Susan helps USDA Rural Development live our mission of increasing economic opportunities and improving the quality of life for all rural Americans,” Menner said. “We are extremely grateful that Susan has been a part of our agency the past 25 years.”

USDA Rural Development currently administers and manages more than 40 housing, business and community infrastructure and facility loan and grant programs designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America.

During the past year the agency helped a record number of Iowans receive funding for economic development projects and quality of life improvements. The agency’s investment in Iowa helped create or retain more than 2,200 jobs, aided 2,500 families in buying their own homes and assisted more than 250 communities as they made improvements to their facilities, services and infrastructure. 

USDA Rural Development has 11 offices across the state to serve the 1.7 million Iowans living in rural communities and areas. Office locations include a State Office in Des Moines, along with Area Offices in Albia, Atlantic, Humboldt, Indianola, Iowa Falls, Le Mars, Mount Pleasant, Storm Lake, Tipton and Waverly.
