(FEBRUARY 3, 2012) USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROVIDES NEARLY HALF A MILLION DOLLARS TO SUPPORT BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES IN CENTRAL NEW YORK
Syracuse, NY, Feb 03, 2012 --

@@Today, USDA Rural Development New York State Director Jill Harvey announced seven projects in Central New York that have received funding through Rural Development’s Value Added Producer Grant Program (VAPG). Value-added products are created when a producer increases the consumer value of an agricultural commodity in the production or processing stage. This announcement is part of twenty-one projects funded throughout the state, totaling nearly $2 million.

The following is a listing of projects funded in Central New York;

New York Beef Farmer’s Cooperative $36,500

Farmer Ground Flour, LLC $75,000

CELK Distilling, LLC $150,000

Keuka Lake Vineyards, LTD $37,301

Red Jacket Orchards $49,500

Hosmer, Inc. $49,990

Guppy’s Berry Farm $3,650

The funded projects will create jobs for agricultural producers, businesses and families. The grants act as a catalyst for business development and entrepreneurship by providing access to capital and technical assistance.

Red Jacket Orchards will use funds to process and market juice grade apples into all natural 100% fruit juices to be sold to over 80 college campuses throughout the Northeast United States. New York Beef Farmer’s Cooperative will use funds to complete operating and marketing plans for the cooperative’s proposed value-added beef and pork products, to be sold locally under their Side Hill Products brand. CELK Distilling, LLC will be creating a farm distillery using fruits supplied by the farm to produce vodka, hard cider, and brandies.

“By creating value-added products, farmers can expand economic opportunities, create jobs and keep wealth in rural communities,” Jill Harvey said. “These projects will promote business expansion and entrepreneurship by helping local businesses get access to capital, technical assistance and new markets for their products and services.”
