Syracuse, NY, Mar 06, 2012 -- Today, USDA Rural Development State Director Jill Harvey announced a $129,000 grant to St. Regis Mohawk Tribe to construct the Diabetes Center of Excellence. Today’s announcement is the second phase of funding for this new facility. Last year, rural development obligated $206,900 for the facility.
Five years ago the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Council made it a priority to address the Akwesasne community’s diabetes health issue. They realized that with over 13% of their population having either Type I or Type II diabetes, this was not only a health issue but a health crisis within their community. The Tribal Council created the “Let’s Get Healthy Program” at the Saint Regis Mohawk Health Services Department and developed a formalized program for diabetes education and care. This included basic medical care, healthy living education, physical fitness, and preventive care education. The Saint Regis Mohawk Diabetes Center of Excellence is a large part of this program where diabetes care and education can be taught to all individuals in a modern, efficient facility. The building will include education rooms, offices, a conference room, treatment rooms, dietician’s area, training kitchen, training gardens, locker rooms, and exercise areas.
The construction of the Diabetes Center of Excellence is a $3,068,900 project that has very strong community support. The Tribe has committed $1,026,300, Akwesasne Housing Authority $1,000,000, Department of Energy $106,000, HUD $600,000, and USDA RD’s contribution of $336,600 completed the funding package. Construction will begin in the spring.
