|Wiota, Iowa, Mar 19, 2012
“We are extremely pleased to be assisting Wiota Wind Energy LLC with this exciting project that brings southwest Iowa’s newest wind turbine online,” Menner said. “This project is another example of the Obama Administration’s ongoing commitment to developing domestic energy sources.”
USDA Rural Development participated in the project by providing a $504,733 loan guarantee through its Rural Energy for America Program (REAP).
Wiota Wind Energy LLC was formed in 2011 and includes several private local investors. This is the organization’s first turbine.
This commercial sized community-owned wind turbine is expected to generate as many as 5,900 MWh annually with a design life of 20 to 25 years. A power purchase agreement has been made with the local power cooperative.
Since 2002, USDA Rural Development has awarded $177 million in guaranteed loans and grants to help more than 1,500 small businesses and producers in Iowa develop biofuels, install renewable energy systems such as wind turbines, geothermal and solar, and reduce energy costs by making energy-efficiency improvements.
USDA recently launched a new energy web site at www.usda.gov/energy. The site makes it easier for Americans to access USDA energy programs, see where USDA is making investments in renewable energy, and see how those investments are translating into American jobs.

This past year USDA Rural Development’s investment in Iowa helped create or retain more than 1,900 jobs, aided 2,000 families in buying their own homes and assisted more than 80 communities as they made improvements to their facilities, services and infrastructure.
“USDA Rural Development’s energy programs are making significant impacts on rural communities throughout the state,” Menner said. “The business owners and farmers benefitting from this assistance are decreasing their energy footprint, converting renewable resources into cleaner energy, and creating and saving jobs.”
