@@USDA Rural Development has awarded $50,000 to the Table Rock Historical Society and Museum, Inc. of Table Rock, Nebraska to renovate and convert the historic Catholic Church into a museum. Table Rock Historical Society and Museum, Inc. will match the funds.
“The Table Rock Historical Society is very pleased to be receiving this grant to preserve the St. John's Catholic Church. This church, having being built in 1877, is one of the oldest churches in Southeast Nebraska. It is a very unique building that we felt was important to preserve for the history of our community,” said Board Member Kim Vrtiska, Table Rock Historical Society and Museum, Inc. “The church has large murals covering the interior that were painted by a displaced immigrant in appreciation for refuge in our small community. He used his artistic talents to create on plain wallboard an illusion of marble walls, pillars, and curtains. Most striking is the large mural behind the altar.”
Renovations include replacing the footings and foundation, new interior and exterior paint and the installation of a new roof and doors. The stained glass windows will be repaired and the statues restored. Additionally, the interior wood floor will be refurbished.
Vrtiska said, “We will begin working immediately with local contractors to raise the church and replace the foundation as we are in danger of losing the building due to the crumbling foundation. We hope to have the project completed by the end of the summer and open to the public.”
“This is a project the Historical Society has wanted to do for many years. USDA Rural Development is very excited to be part of this project and in saving this beautiful church,” said Area Specialist Janice Stopak, USDA Rural Development.
Funding was provided through the USDA Rural Development Community Facility and Economic Impact Initiative Grant programs. For more information contact Janice Stopak at (402) 423-9683 ext. 121 or Janice.email@example.com.
