A NEW ROAD HOME
Apr 27, 2012 --

The Village of Cook, Nebraska decided that it was time to replace the street, curbs, and sidewalks in its downtown area. The pavement was crumbling and deteriorating, causing accessibility issues.

The Village approached Rural Development in August 2009 to assist it in the funding of a street and sidewalk project. Through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds, which were available in federal fiscal years 2009 and 2010, Rural Development provided $452,000 in loans for the project. A Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) of $350,000 through the Nebraska Department of Economic Development also was awarded. The remaining $122,000 was contributed by the Village.

The Village of Cook now has new streets, sidewalks, railings and a beautiful retaining wall in its downtown area. There are no longer accessibility issues and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mats are in place to enhance safety for the residents. Driving down the street is now a smooth ride. There are no longer holes from the deterioration that plagued the pavement.
