LEXINGTON, Ky., May 03, 2012 -- Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that USDA is accepting applications through the Community Connect Broadband program for grants to provide broadband service to residents of remote, rural communities.
“Ensuring that all Americans have access to reliable broadband is a key part of the Obama Administration’s effort to help create jobs and expand economic opportunities in rural areas,” Vilsack said. “These grants not only are critical for businesses and residents, they also help first responders, educators and health care professionals by providing them with access to broadband service.”
Rural Development State Director Tom Fern said Community Connect grants are made available to the most rural, unserved and economically challenged areas. The funds are used to build broadband infrastructure. Awardees are also required to establish community centers that offer free public access to broadband.
“Building a broadband infrastructure is critical to creating jobs and economic opportunity, and Rural Development is focused every day on creating thriving rural communities where people want to live and raise families,” said Fern.
For example, in August 2011, Crystal Broadband Networks received funding for two projects in Lee County. The company will receive $576,400 to provide and improve broadband service to residents in the community of Heidelberg and $583,400 for a broadband project in the Yellow Rock community.
A second Kentucky company also was awarded funding last year. Inter Mountain Cable Inc. received $993,339 in 2011 to provide and/or improve broadband service to residents in the Endicott community of Floyd County.
