(MAY 16, 2012) USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS WITH MISSISSIPPI COUNTY PORT AUTHORITY

Dorena, MO, May 16, 2012 -- On Wednesday, May 16, 2012, Anita J. Dunning, Missouri State Director for USDA Rural Development, presented the Mississippi County Port Authority with a certificate of recognition. The Port Authority was awarded $52,500 Community Facility Grant funds to purchase replacement engines for the Dorena-Hickman Ferry.

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry is one of the few remaining riverboat ferries in the U.S. and the only operating ferry crossing the Mississippi River between Missouri and Kentucky. The ferry is owned by the Mississippi County Port Authority and the operation service is contracted to Stam Marine Enterprises, Inc. The funds provided by USDA Rural Development assisted in the purchase of two replacement diesel engines for the ferry. The new engines provide a more efficient use of diesel and quicker trips across the river, thereby ensuring the continued success of the ferry. Those traveling across the river can save a great deal of time and fuel on a daily basis by utilizing the ferry, which operates seven days a week, year round, with the exception of Christmas Day.

“Having a consistent, reliable source of transportation is a very important necessity and I commend all for their hard work in making this project a reality,” said Dunning. “Special thanks are extended to our federal elected officials for supporting the USDA Rural Development programs. They have been strong proponents for the necessary funding for essential services for rural Missourians.”

USDA Rural Development’s mission is to deliver programs in a way that will support increasing economic opportunity and improve the quality of life of rural residents. Rural Development provides equity and technical assistance to finance and foster growth in homeownership, business development, and critical community and technology infrastructure.
