@@Rural Development South Dakota State Director Elsie M. Meeks announced the award of $99,900 Rural Business Enterprise Grant Funds (RBEG) to The Lakota Fund, Inc.
The Rural Development funds will aid The Lakota Fund, Inc. with providing technical assistance for small and emerging sub-contractors/contractors in Shannon County.
“United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack’s leadership, has cultivated a firm commitment to furthering economic development in tribal communities,” said Joe Leonard, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (Washington, DC). “This award to the Lakota Fund, Inc. is another example of this administration's efforts to fulfill these important endeavors.”
“This project provides opportunity and resources to support services on the reservation. The partnership with The Lakota Fund, Inc. shows what can be accomplished when government and entrepreneurs work together to bring increased economic stimulus and jobs to rural South Dakotans,” stated Meeks. “The Obama Administration is committed to improving the lives of rural Americans, put people back to work and build thriving economies in rural communities.”
“With the support of the USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant award, Lakota Funds will be launching Lakota Business Plus (LB+), a project to deliver specialized technical assistance to businesses on the Pine Ridge Reservation and providing the tools necessary for them to develop and expand, ultimately increasing job creation,” commented Tawney Brunsch, Executive Director of The Lakota Fund, Inc.
USDA Rural Development serves as the lead federal agency for rural development needs by offering financial and technical assistance to individuals, businesses, and communities. USDA Rural Development programs include funding for day care centers, fire trucks and other community facility projects; the purchase, construction or repair of homes; loans and guarantees to rural businesses to save or create jobs and renewable energy; and loans and grants for water and sewer utility projects.
USDA Rural Development has eight offices in the state serving South Dakotans living in rural areas and communities. Office locations include a state office in Huron, along with area offices in Aberdeen, Mitchell, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Watertown, and Yankton.
