USDA CELEBRATES NATIONAL HOMEOWNERSHIP MONTH IN EASTERN NEW MEXICO
Homeowners in Santa Rosa and Tucumcari to be honored during celebration

Albuquerque, Jun 12, 2012 -- USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner and national housing administrator Tammye Treviño traveled to Santa Rosa and Tucumcari today to participate in the National Homeownership Month celebration. The visits were some of the numerous events being held across New Mexico and the nation throughout the month of June (see attached listing).

National Homeownership Month is celebrated to bring attention to homeownership and its advantages. The celebration is also used to honor those that have become new homeowners and to give recognition to those that work to help people reach their dream of homeownership.

Planned by the homeownership coalition made up by USDA Rural Development the Mortgage Finance Authority (MFA) and the REALTORS® Association of New Mexico (RANM) the events are designed to educate the public about the rewards of homeownership.

In Santa Rosa, Ms. Trinnie Rodarte a single mom of four was honored because of her hard work to become a homeowner. During the event, Ms. Rodarte was given a U.S. flag to fly on her new home to celebrate her new status as a ‘homeowner’. Mr. Leonard Yee the general manager of Oakwood home in Las Vegas, New Mexico was also honored during the ceremony with a certificate of appreciation for his support of USDA housing programs.

In Tucumcari Francisco and Keren Martinez were also honored with a U.S. flag for becoming the newest homeowners in that community. The Martinez’s are also a good example of a family that worked hard to purchase their three bedroom well built brick home. Also, during that celebration local realtor Mickey Trousdale was given a certificate of appreciation also because of his many years of work to provide homeownership to the residents of eastern New Mexico.

When asked why homeownership is being celebrated Brunner responded by saying, “Now is a great time to purchase a home because mortgage interest rates are at or near historic lows and home prices are as affordable as they have been in nearly a generation. And, we know people are taking advantage of the opportunity to purchase a home because USDA Rural Development Guaranteed loans are up 20 percent over last year.

Administrator Treviño agreed by saying, “This is a great time to buy a home-- Interest rates are at or near record lows, and housing prices are more affordable than they’ve been in nearly a generation. The Obama Administration housing’s policies are helping to strengthen communities and driving the nation’s ongoing economic recovery forward.”

National Homeownership Month began in 1997 as a challenge to increase the number of homeowners throughout the United States. Government studies have shown that homeownership is a key element in the nation’s economy with the housing industry accounting for about 15 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in a typical year. Studies also show that neighborhoods are strengthened when there is a higher percentage of homeownership. Homeowners are proven to be more active in their neighborhoods, they contribute more to their communities and a more stable environment for families is created.

USDA Rural Development’s mission is to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for rural residents. Rural Development fosters growth in homeownership, finances business development, and supports the creation of critical community and technology infrastructure.
