Albuquerque, Jun 20, 2012 -- USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner, was in Anthony, New Mexico today to present the 2012 Site Manager of the year award to Ms. Blanca Hernandez the manager of the Franklin Vista Apartment complex located in that community.
Hernandez was nominated for the award because of her tireless work to provide the best living conditions in an apartment complex that was financed through USDA’s Multi-Family Housing program. Since 2006 in one way or another Ms. Hernandez’s work has provided hundreds of families in Anthony with a safe, healthy, nice place to live.
In the nomination letter it was pointed out that Ms. Hernandez has actually put her life in danger as she has fought against the gang problem in Anthony. For example, Ms. Hernandez has staff paint over graffiti on a daily basis and she has worked closely with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department to develop strategies to fight against the gang activity in her neighborhood.
In presenting the award Brunner said, “It is evident that Blanca cares for her tenants as if they are her own family. She has strived to make this apartment complex the best place for these families to call home.” Brunner added, “I proudly give this award to a true hero who protects her tenants by continually standing up to gang members whose only care in life --is to cause trouble.”
In the nomination letter for the award, Hernandez is cited for taking on the challenge of creating a safe, positive environment for her residents with her zero tolerance for drug and gang activity despite being harassed and even having her children’s lives threatened. Ms. Hernandez walks the properties each night to ensure there is no suspicious activity. She also posts school bulletins in the community room n English and Spanish to facilitate parental involvement.
Hernandez’s nomination also includes how she abides by USDA Rural Development laws and rules governing the management of an apartment complex funded through the RD’s Housing program.
Throughout the month of June, USDA Rural Development, New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority (MFA) and the REALTORS® Association of New Mexico (RANM) have partnered to celebrate Homeownership Month.
During the month various events including training sessions on home loan programs and honoring individual homeowners have been held to bring attention to the advantages of homeownership. The Site Manager of the Year award was included in the celebration because many of those living in apartments will eventually graduate to become homeowners and realize the “American Dream of Homeownership”.
