@@WNDD Receives Innovation Award for Regional SET Planning Process

(Carson City, NV—October 11, 2012) The Western Nevada Development District (WNDD), has received the National Association of Development Organization’s (NADO) 2012 Innovation Award for its work to provide the Stronger Economies Together strategic regional planning process to the nine counties of the District.

The award will be announced and the SET program will be showcased at the NADO conference in Las Vegas Oct. 13-16.

The SET Program is a broad interagency, inter-jurisdictional, public/private regional strategic planning effort for the nine county region that has been ongoing over the last eight months and includes Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Humboldt, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, Storey, and Washoe Counties. The SET Regional Plan is due for completion and publication in November 2012, and is aligned with the Governor’s Plan for Economic Development released by Governor Brian Sandoval in February of 2012.

WNDD partnered with the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development, USDA Rural Development Nevada; University of Nevada, Cooperative Extension; University of Nevada, Small Business Development Center; Nevada Rural Development Council; University of Nevada Center for Economic for Economic Development; and ConnectNevada to develop content and deliver it to 125 regional team members, including average citizens, government officials, private business leaders, economic development professionals, higher education representatives, workforce development representatives, and health care and human service representatives.

Participants say the process has helped them adopt a regional world view. “I was at a training in Illinois and all of the economic development professionals from the Midwest had blinders on and were only thinking about their town or county, but because of the SET we’re thinking regionally in Northern Nevada and I am already seeing that frame of mind lead to economic development projects that are good for Pershing County—and the region,” said Heidi Lusby, Coordinator of the Pershing County Economic Diversification Authority.

WNDD received funding in support of this process from the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development, Wells Fargo, Rural Nevada Development Corporation, NvEnergy, Nevada Mining Association, the Tahoe Reno-Industrial Center and Allied Nevada Gold.
