(OCTOBER 22, 2012) USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROVIDES $50,000 IN GRANT FUNDS TO ASSIST HOMEOWNERS REHABILITATE HOMES IN HILO, HAWAII
HILO, Hawaii, Oct 22, 2012 --

@@USDA Rural Development announced today that Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council (HCEOC) has been selected to receive grant funds in the amount of $50,000.

The grant was awarded under USDA Rural Development's Housing Preservation Grant (HPG) Program. The HPG program provides grants to sponsoring organizations to rehabilitate the housing needs of low and very low-income families. Grant awards are competitive and made available in areas where there is a concentration of need.

"Rural Development's housing programs are an integral part of the Obama Administration's commitment to improve the quality of life in rural communities," said Chris J. Kanazawa, USDA Rural Development State Director for Hawaii and the Western Pacific. "This preservation program helps people with limited resources improve the quality of their homes while possibly removing any safety hazards. Ultimately, this program allows rural residents of Hawaii stay in their communities."

HCEOC will utilize grant funds to assist four to five families rehabilitate their homes in rural areas on the east side of the Island of Hawaii.

USDA, through its Rural Development mission area, administers and manages housing, business and community infrastructure programs through a national network of state and local offices. Rural Development has an active portfolio of more than $172 billion in loans and loan guarantees. These programs are designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America
