Alleghany Meats is Open for Business
The dream of Betty Mitchell, Director of the nearby Highland Center was to provide a Certified USDA meat processing facility that would offer a large number of local cattle farmers with a direct marketing option. This direct access to the regional meat consumers would increase profit margins for the producers and also provide a great source of locally grown beef, sheep, bison and other meats to local families.
In April 2012, Mrs. Mitchell’s dream came true with the grand opening of Alleghany Meats. With $480,000 in assistance provided by Rural Development’s Rural Business/REDLG Direct Loan Program, working in conjunction with The Virginia Highland Center and the Highland Telephone Cooperative, the state-of-the-art meat processing center is now open for business.
The facility is fully certified by USDA and the VDACS to process and sell locally grown meats. They offer custom cuts of a variety of meats along with aging to tenderize, smoking and sausage production. More information can be found at their website http://www.alleghanymeats.com/
