USDA Rural Development Funds $82,500 for Ft. McDermitt Tribal Travel Plaza
(CARSON CITY –Oct. 17, 2012) - The State Office of USDA Rural Development has approved $172,000 in funding for four Rural Business Enterprise Grants (RBEG) projects, including $82,500 for the Ft. McDermitt Tribe to open its new Travel Plaza in the spring of 2013.
The Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Tribe will use the $82,500 grant to receive technical assistance and training for the start-up of their new tribally chartered travel plaza to be located on the Reservation along Highway 95 just 3 miles South of McDermitt, Nevada.
The business is scheduled to open in March 2013. The applicant is providing $20,625 in match on the project.
The funds will also allow the Tribe to purchase fixtures and equipment for business start-up in an area that needs both gasoline services and other amenities for travelers.
Tribal Chair Billy Bell said he is hopeful that the new travel plaza will provide an opportunity for both travelers and employment for tribal members. “We expect to open in early spring 2013, and at that point, we will initially employ six people,” said Bell. “We hope to serve the northwestern quadrant of the state for gas and refreshments for travelers.”
