Jonesfield Township Breaks Ground on Fire Station Thanks to USDA Rural Development

EAST LANSING, Dec. 3, 2012 – U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Turner joined local officials in breaking ground for Jonesville Township’s new main fire station, located in Merrill. The agency is providing a $1,395,000 Community Facility loan to fund the project.

“USDA Rural Development has a great relationship with Jonesfield Township and the surrounding area,” said Turner. “This project is an investment in improved public safety that will pay dividends for years to come.”

The new 7,400 square-foot facility will replace an older structure that lacks ventilation systems and cannot accommodate vehicles and equipment. The project will serve 1,710 rural customers.

USDA Rural Development provided a $225,000 loan for a fire truck to Jonesfield Township in 2001 and supported water and sewer projects for Merrill in 2004 and 2007, providing a total of $3,470,000 in loans and $2,035,000 in grants.

USDA Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Turner was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009.  USDA, through its Rural Development mission area, administers and manages housing, business and community infrastructure programs through a national network of state and local offices. These programs are designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America. Rural Development has an existing portfolio of more than $172 billion in loans and loan guarantees.
