Outline of Need:

The owners of Brudd Construction Company needed a new location and facility that would provide an opportunity for growth and diversity for their business. The Port of Avoyelles needed businesses to take advantage of economic development opportunities and the town of Simmesport desperately needed jobs.

How Rural Development Helped:

Brudd Construction Company received a $380,000 guaranteed loan from USDA Rural Development to construct a new main office facility on land owned by the Avoyelles Parish Port Commission. They also received a Louisiana Community Development grant for $308,454.

Through the Rural Business Service (RBS), the Port of Avoyelles received a Rural Business Enterprise Grant (RBEG) in 2010 to purchase 50 acres of land for economic development opportunities for small and emerging businesses.

The End Result:

The Avoyelles Parish Port Commission, the town of Simmesport, the Avoyelles Parish Police Jury, and other business agencies work progressively as a team to locate businesses to the Central Louisiana region to assist with job creation for the surrounding communities.

South of Simmesport, along the Atchafalaya River, ground was broken for the new 3,700 square-foot corporate headquarters for Brudd Construction Company. The site chosen is on land that once housed hurricane evacuees. “This location is a perfect fit for Brudd to expand, add a new division, and operate their business in close proximity to a deep water channel. It will also help the port by adding a new tenant that will bring local jobs and a new business to the community,” said USDA Rural Development State Director Clarence W. Hawkins at the groundbreaking ceremony that launched phase I for Brudd Construction Company.

Brudd Construction is a heavy highway construction company that specializes in projects such as bridge approaches, drainage structures, and chip seals. Currently, Brudd employs 35 and anticipates 27 additional jobs.

With business program staff assisting, USDA Rural Development was able to help a growing company locate to the Avoyelles Parish Port, which has developed many partnerships, including one with Cottonport Bank to finance the construction of a warehouse as part of the Brudd project. Through Rural Development, the Port and the surrounding area have seen the addition of a new business and much needed jobs in an area that has had slow growth and is designated a persistently poor area.
