USDA Announces Funding for Projects to Provide
Affordable Housing for Farmworkers
CHAMPAIGN, Ill., January 10, 2013 – Agriculture Under Secretary for Rural Development Dallas Tonsager announced earlier this week that USDA has awarded loans and grants to 12 organizations to construct, purchase and rehabilitate rural, multi-family, farm labor housing properties.
In Illinois, a $1,455,000 loan proposal was invited from Deenslake Affordable Housing of Pembroke Township. The proposal includes plans to build 12 apartments which would be open year round for farmworkers or processing workers on a 5 acre wooded area on the edge of Hopkins Park. Deenslake Affordable Housing plans to build energy efficient units following the standards of LEED Certification, Energy Star for Homes and the Department of Energy Builder’s Challenge.
“The Obama Administration is committed to helping all residents in rural America,” said Tonsager. "This program provides clean, safe, affordable housing to rural farm labor residents.”
“The Pembroke and Hopkins Park communities as well as surrounding agricultural producers will see multiple benefits as this project will provide additional energy efficient housing options for farmworkers,” added Illinois Rural Development Director Colleen Callahan. “We look forward to participating in this affordable housing development.”
USDA, through its Rural Development mission area, has an active portfolio of more than $172 billion in loans and loan guarantees. These programs are designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America.
