@@As a community grows, so does the need for space to house various city services. The growth Tennessee Ridge has experienced lately has had city officials looking for somewhere to expand their local administration offices.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) remains focused on carrying out its mission, despite a time of significant budget uncertainty. Today's announcement is one part of the Department's efforts to strengthen the rural economy.
USDA Rural Development (RD) Area Director Christopher Westbrook and other local officials announced a $405,445 low-interest loan and $34,600 grant to construct a 4,500 square foot city hall building near State Highway 147. The new facility will include enough office space to accommodate the city’s management services as well as a 3,000 square-foot tornado safe room that will double as space for public meetings and events.
"A city's success attracting and growing businesses has a lot to do with its ability to provide essential services like water and sewer, public safety, and administration" said Westbrook. "Building a more accessible, modern City Hall will bring these services under one roof and create a better place for people to come together for the good of their community."
In addition to Rural Development funding, Tennessee Ridge also received a $414,480 from FEMA/TEMA and $69,080 from the state that will be combined with $74,929 in contributions from the city for a total investment of $998,534 for the construction.
Others participating in the event included State Senator Mark Green, State Representative John C. Tidwell and Area Specialist Lola Maratita.
Rural Development community programs finance construction or improvements to essential services like reliable access to clean water, wastewater treatment, healthcare, education, job training and first responder facilities. Loan-guarantees encourage private lenders to expand the availability of affordable financing in rural communities. Direct loans and grants create sound financial opportunities for local governments to meet essential infrastructure needs.
USDA Rural Development invests in jobs, infrastructure, community development, homeownership and affordable rental housing to improve the economic health of rural communities. During the last four years the agency has assisted more than 1.5 million Tennessee families and businesses in 158 communities, investing more than $3.3 Billion into local economies through affordable loans, loan guarantees and grants.
USDA has made a concerted effort to deliver results for the American people, even as USDA implements sequestration - the across-the-board budget reductions mandated under terms of the Budget Control Act. USDA has already undertaken historic efforts since 2009 to save more than $700 million in taxpayer funds through targeted, common-sense budget reductions. These reductions have put USDA in a better position to carry out its mission, while implementing sequester budget reductions in a fair manner that causes as little disruption as possible.
