MULLEN REST HOME RESIDENTS GET A NEW SET OF WHEELS
May 08, 2013 --

Imagine having to drive 76 miles one way to visit a doctor. Then imagine taking that trip in a 1979 club wagon van that is very bumpy and has a tendency to make passengers car sick. That is exactly what the residents at Pioneer Memorial Long Term Care Rest Home at Mullen had to endure. It was so bad that some of the residents did not want to go see their doctors.

USDA Rural Development provided Mullen Hospital District dba Pioneer Memorial Long Term Care Rest Home with a grant of $14,650 in September 2011 to purchase a new van.

When Administrator Dawn Mallory received word that they were awarded the grant she began the hunt for “just the right vehicle”.

The “right” van was presented to the residents during their Christmas party. While enjoying fun, food and family the residents looked out to see their new 2010 Chrysler Town and Country handicap van.

“The residents were so excited about the new van that they took out two separate groups to look at Christmas lights the following Saturday evening, and the residents rode around for one and one-half hours in Mullen, which means each street was driven twice with each load of happy residents!” said Mallory. “Thanks to USDA Rural Development for helping our residents to ‘get to their doctors’ and ‘to enjoy a bit more of scenic touring.”
