BOTTINEAU, Jul 19, 2013 -- Jasper Schneider, USDA Rural Development state director, announced today that the Entrepreneurial Center for Horticulture (ECH) at Dakota College at Bottineau received a $100,000 grant for local foods development.
“The demand for local produce continues to be a growing business opportunity,” said Schneider. “This funding will allow the horticulture center to provide technical assistance and other resources to support business growth.”
The ECH will use the grant funding to help small to mid-size producers sell their locally grown vegetables. This support will focus on marketing, business strategies, and production. The center will also work to build farmers markets, direct-to-consumer channels for local produce sales as well as implementing distribution channels for wholesale sales through food hubs and cooperatives.
The funding was provided through the USDA Rural Business Opportunity Grant (RBOG) program, which focuses on business expansion and job creation. Since 2009, the RBOG program has invested more than $890,000 in North Dakota. For more information on USDA programs, please call (701) 530-2037 or visit www.rurdev.usda.gov/nd.
