@@Bill Menner, USDA Rural Development State Director in Iowa, announced that Karla Peiffer, USDA Rural Development Community Programs Director in Iowa, has received a 2013 Secretary’s Honor Award for innovative customer service that enhanced the economic vitality and quality of life for thousands of rural Iowans.
Peiffer was recognized at the 65th Annual Secretary’s Honors Awards celebration held on December 11, 2013 in Washington, DC and was one of just eight USDA employees nationwide recognized for individual achievements.
The Secretary’s Honor Awards program identifies the hard work and dedication of all USDA employees and honors those who have taken the commitment to public service to a new level.
“We are extremely pleased that Karla’s dedication to serving rural communities was identified by Secretary Vilsack,” said Bill Menner, USDA Rural Development State Director in Iowa. “Karla exemplifies quality public service in all that she does.”
For the past four years, Peiffer has worked diligently with a USDA Rural Development borrower to facilitate debt restructuring. Her dedication and efforts prevented unprecedented water rate increases for thousands of rural Iowans.
A team from USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) in Ames, Iowa, was also recognized with a 2013 Secretary’s Award for Personal and Professional Excellence for their work implementing whole genome sequencing to increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the bovine tuberculosis eradication program.

Under the President’s leadership, these investments in housing, community facilities, businesses and infrastructure have empowered rural America to continue leading the way – strengthening America’s economy, small towns and rural communities. USDA’s investments in rural communities support the rural way of life that stands as the backbone of our American values.
