(JANUARY 29, 2014) RURAL DEVELOPMENT FUNDS TO BOOST SAFETY AND PROTECT LIVES

Stover, MO, Jan 29, 2014 -- USDA Rural Development Assistant to the State Director Tim Rickabaugh, on behalf of Rural Development State Director Janie Dunning, today announced funding for the City of Stover. Rural Development approved an Economic Impact Initiative Grant in the amount of $2,200. Rural Development funds will be used to purchase radar guns for the Police Department.

"One of the basic needs of our society is safety. We all want to feel protected from harm and from those who can cause the harm. Rural public safety departments are tasked with provding this safety and protection while, often, struggling with limited resources. Rural Development understands this challenge,” Dunning said. “The EII Grant attempts to overcome the barriers faced by public safety departments in rural areas. EII is tailored to public safety. Stover realizes the importance of protecting residents and visitors. This equipment will provide officers another tool for meeting the difficult task of assuring protection. We are proud to partner with Stover for the benefit of the community’s citizens."

EII grants are available to rural communities with a not employed rate of greater than 19-1/2 percent to help develop essential community facilities. One goal of the EII program is to provide funding for rural first responder agencies. These funds have been used by rural communities to purchase, among other critical items, police cars, fire trucks, emergency rescue equipment and communications devices.

U.S. Representative Vicky Hartzler commented, “Safety is an important issue, especially when it comes to our children, and I welcome the USDA Economic Impact Initiative Grant that will be used to purchase new radar guns for Stover law enforcement. These radar guns will help protect the safety of the many students who cross busy Highway 52.”

This use of USDA Rural Development funding is another reminder of the importance of USDA programs from rural America.  Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack stresses that a comprehensive new Food, Farm and Jobs Bill would further expand the rural economy.  He said that’s just one reason why Congress must get a comprehensive Food, Farm and Jobs Bill done as soon as possible.

President Obama’s plan for rural America has brought about historic investment and resulted in stronger rural communities. Under the President’s leadership, these investments in housing, community facilities, businesses and infrastructure have empowered rural America to continue leading the way – strengthening America’s economy, small towns and rural communities. USDA’s investments in rural communities support the rural way of life that stands as the backbone of our American values.
