USDA HELPS CALIFORNIA DAIRY DELIVER MILK TO DOORSTEPS
, Feb 01, 2014 --

Top O’ the Morn Farms is a medium-sized family-owned dairy with approximately 1,850 milking head in the heart of California's San Joaquin Valley. The owners were looking for additional opportunities to increase revenue for the farm, and were interested in marketing their own fresh bottled milk directly to local customers' doorsteps. Not only would they offer a local alternative to milk products, but it would be a fresher product as well.

Rural Development first helped Top O' the Morn Farms in 2009 with a $50,000 Value-Added Producer Grant to evaluate the feasibility of their idea, and then again in 2011 with a $300,000 Value-Added Producer Grant for working capital.

After Top O' the Morn Farms completed their study, they started on the path to build a processing and bottling plant on location at their farm. With help from Rural Development's grant, they now produce, bottle and deliver milk directly to the doorstep of over 700 customers. As they continue to grow their home delivery program, they also have made their products available in area grocery stores, farmers markets, restaurants, and even two dairy drive-thru locations. And Top O' the Morn Farms delivers much more than just plain milk. They offer a variety of flavors ranging from traditional chocolate and strawberry milk and seasonal eggnog to more unique options like root beer milk. Top O' the Morn Farms completed their project in August 2013 and had successfully created 7 full-time jobs and 3 part-time jobs. Since that time, their business has continued to grow and they have doubled the number of full-time jobs.
