June 23, 2004 -- Agriculture Secretary Veneman announced that 23 applicants from 19 states have been selected to receive over $12.3 million in loans and grants to assist with job and business development. June 25, 2004 -- Agriculture Secretary Veneman recognized Rural Development employees for achievements and contributions toward fulfilling USDA’s mission. The awards were distributed at the 58th annual USDA Honor Awards Ceremony. Rural Development staff received eight 2004 USDA Honor Awards, and Beverly Jones received the Rural Development Javits-Wagner-O'Day Special Achievement Award.

June 14, 2004 -- While in Ohio, Acting Under Secretary Gilbert G. Gonzalez joined Small Business Administration Deputy Administrator Melanie Sabelhaus (click photo to enlarge) at the Annin Flag Company -- the U.S.'s oldest and largest flag manufacturer -- to jointly announce the Rural Business Investment Program. This is a Bush Administration effort to stimulate rural business development and jobs by providing greater access to venture capital investment funds. Under the program, SBA, on behalf of USDA, will enable venture capital companies to offer access to capital to rural enterprises.

June is National Homeownership Month
June 8, 2004 -- Rural Development Acting Under Secretary Gilbert G. Gonzalez (click photo to enlarge) was in Ohio to recognize the Fayette County Community Action Commission's efforts to make affordable housing available. The Commission has completed 120 homes using Rural Development's Self-Help Housing program. Under Secretary Gonzalez presented the Commission with a $550,000 grant that will help build 30 new homes in Washington Court House, Ohio.
